Foto Konijnenberg

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Roomba

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Well, after years of begging, my wife has allowed me to get a roomba (she didn’t like it since I have a tendency to be lazy and let robots do my work for me. : ) This little buddy has been in use for a couple of months now and I’m very satisfied with it. It’s the 530 entry-level model and it does make quite a difference with our 1-year old daughter crawling around. The roomba gets in all herd to reach spots where it picks up anything she might get her hands on. (If you have a baby at home, you know how hard it is to keep them from eating dust-bunnies or fluff)

This is the roomba with to the bottom the power adaptor and to the right, the charging station to which it will return after cleaning.

The roomba has sensors to detect obstacles such as stairs, a main brush for heavy dirt and a little vacuum cleaning motor for fine dirt.

It’s amazing what it will find even after you have vacuumed with a regular dyson.

Update November 2008

I’ve had to repair the side brush holder as the roomba ran under a bookshelf which wasn’t fastened down that wall and he got the entire bookshelf on his head. a small part of the blue plastic which contains the rotating gear had broken and was jamming so that the brush would refuse to work. I removed the broken bit, gave it an extra grease job and he works good as new again.

Update januari 2009

The roomba had been sitting in his dock for two weeks without usage (it was a very busy time during the holidays) and on first reactivation, it stopped working after only 15 minutes before needing a recharge. They recharge only lasted 10 minutes before it declared battery full. On the second try, it only lasted 20 minutes before needing a recharge. i was fearing a broken abttery, but it turns out that Roomba likes regular cleaning activity. It will consume battery power when doing nothing and that has a negative effect on the battery life. Fortunately, four full recharge/vacuum till battery empty cycles later, it was back to its normal routine and the battery is back to it’s original condition. So take note and let Roomba work at least one a weak, or disconnect the battery pack with a 30% charge when not in use for longer periods of time.
